This is a 51 product, which, if you’re in the US, you might be familiar with. It’s one of the largest cachaça producers and one of the largest distilleries in the world.

I picked up this product at one of the large, big box stores here in Brasilia, on a weekly shopping trip.

This cachaça is a very light amber and sits nicely in the glass. It smells like a whisky, though I did get a very slight hint of cane on the end. It almost reminded me of Johnnie Walker Red, or something of the sort, which isn’t a backhanded compliment.

The cachaça warms the tongue, but isn’t terribly flavorful. Better on the rocks than neat, it’s a perfectly drinkable, quite affordable cachaça. I didn’t make a cachaça and soda with this, but I can imagine this product would be perfect for that. According to Mapa da cachaça, this is made in column stills, which isn’t surprising in the least. It tastes a bit watered down.

I don’t know that 51 is bringing this to your neck of the woods anytime soon. And if you had it in front of you, I’d probably tell you to make any kind of whiskey cocktail. That’s probably the way this is best put to use.
